CHILDHOOD, HUMANITY’S BEST INVESTMENT

The Universal Children’s Day is celebrated worldwide this November 20th, the date that marks the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, subsequently ratified in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This day aims to make a global call to raise awareness about the rights of children, as well as remember the significance of caring for children as the greatest investment that can be done in humanity.

On 20 November 1989, representatives of Governments all over the world, religious leaders, NGOs, and other institutions agreed on the final text of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (the most ratified international treaty in history) which is mandatory for states parties that have signed it.

Some of the main guidelines established by the Convention are the following:

1.Children and adolescents are to be considered subjects of rights and not objects of guardianship. That is to say, their capacities as whole persons are to be acknowledged, taking into account they have special rights as developing individuals.

2.To recognize the right of the children to access to health services, treatment of diseases and rehabilitation.

3.The right of the children to receive an education that will enable them to develop their personality and their physical and mental abilities to their fullest potential.

4.The right of the children to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to their age and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.

5.To be protected against all forms of discrimination

6.To be protected against all forms of physical and mental abuse, neglect or negligence, ill-treatment or exploitation.

7.The right of the children to be protected against economic exploitation and against performing any work that is likely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child’s education, or to be harmful to the child’s health or physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development.

Construir TV wants to join in the commemoration of this date, which is why during the “Construir Cine Specials Series” of November we will premiere THE BEGINNING OF LIFE, a touching documentary with a global perspective to help us understand that providing a loving, secure environment for the children is the greatest investment we can make for humanity.
